Since the acceptance of the 1981 Dungeness bird – assessment of which was initially made difficult by misleading photographic and biometric evidence – there has been a series of records of ‘Eastern Black Redstarts’ in Britain.

This exceptional autumn has produced several records, including one inland in Gloucestershire, so next spring might be a good time to find one in Shetland. I shall not be surprised if one turns up in south mainland or on Fair Isle.
