March in south Shetland

As they feed away, note the much darker rear flank of the White-front (back) compared with Greylag (front)

The past week has brought the first few common migrants alongside wintering birds.

With the Greylags have been small numbers of White-fronts, one or more Pinkfeet and a single Tundra Bean (at Sandwick). First-winter Glaucous Gulls are still at Spiggie and Scatness. Other highlights have included Goosander (at Boddam) and Merlin.

Early migrants in order of appearance have been Chaffinch, Wood Pigeon, Lesser Black-back and Pied Wagtail.

A stunning Shetland Starling – still numerous here
