Starling mimicry

Shetland Starling in song

Calling Raven? No, Starling! An easy mistake to make? I’m sure that most of us have been hoodwinked by Starlings once or twice. The local Starlings have mastered an impressive range of mimicry; in addition to other resident species I have already heard good imitations of:

Greylag Goose
Raven
Oystercatcher
Curlew
Pied Wagtail
Rock Pipit

As well as being interesting in itself, this mimicry will demand a cautious approach towards ‘call only’ records. I wonder how sonograms of mimicry would compare with sonograms of the species being mimicked.
